Year 5 11+ English Course

Expert Preparation for Grammar and Independent School Entrance Exams

Our Year 5 11+ English course is designed to equip pupils with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to succeed in competitive 10+ and 11+ entrance exams. The course follows the Key Stage 2 National Curriculum and extends beyond it to meet the expectations of top grammar and independent schools.

This programme is ideal for Year 5 pupils preparing to sit the 10+ exams in Year 5 or the 11+ exams in Year 6.

Course Content

We cover key areas assessed in 10+ and 11+ English exams through structured and engaging lessons:

  • Reading Comprehension
Builds key skills in retrieval, inference, vocabulary, and prediction, while developing confidence in answering questions on author’s intent, tone, mood, and atmosphere. Covers a broad range of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry texts, with focused analysis of language, structure and meaning. Includes regular practice in both multiple-choice and standard-format questions to ensure well-rounded preparation.

  • Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (GPS)
Reinforces technical accuracy through focused work on sentence structure, punctuation rules, word classes, and spelling patterns.

  • Creative Writing
Encourages pupils to craft imaginative, well-structured stories with a strong focus on character, plot, setting, and dialogue. Lessons cover story planning, character development, figurative language, sentence variety, and techniques for building mood and atmosphere.

  • Descriptive Writing
Teaches how to create vivid imagery and atmosphere using sensory details, figurative language, and precise vocabulary to bring scenes to life.

  • Non-Fiction Writing
Equips pupils to write confidently across a range of formal and exam-relevant styles, including discursive writing (balanced arguments), persuasive writing (opinion pieces and formal letters), news reports, and speeches. Pupils also practise other common formats such as recounts, reviews, and both informal and formal letters.

Throughout the course, pupils also develop crucial exam techniques such as planning, editing, time management, and adapting their writing for different audiences and purposes.
